Dinan Stage 3 Performance Engine Software safely increases turbo-boost pressure, along with properly retuned fuel mixtures, ignition timing and full map rescaling to take full advantage of the High-Performance Intercooler and Oil Cooler. However, there is more to a tune than just cranking up the boost. Power needs to come on smoothly and in a predictable way to make the car as fun to drive at wide-open throttle as cruising around town. It is your BMW, but reborn with new found acceleration and speed.
In order to accomplish this, the boost is tapered at the higher levels to keep from overheating and damaging the turbos. With a peak horsepower of 398 at 5700 RPM and the peak torque of 429 lb-ft at 4300 RPM as tested with Dinan High Capacity Oil Cooler System, it's a monumental increase over the stock 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque BMW quotes. Increased boost pressure exceeds the turbochargers' design limitations at higher RPM, potentially shortening their lifespan. Dinan addresses this issue by tapering the boost gradually at higher engine speeds. This approach also addresses the fact that with increased boost at higher RPM the turbocharger temperatures would exceed the intercooler's ability to cool the intake charge, resulting in a loss of power and compromising the long-term durability of the engine. The tapered boost keeps temperatures within the design limitations so as to optimize output and ensure engine reliability with the added boost pressure. Turbos and intercooler aren't the only things to consider, however. The N54 engine is known to run a little warm in stock form. In an effort to more effectively control oil and water temperatures, the Dinan software actually increases water pump speeds as boost pressure increases. Properly returned fuel mixtures to the DME along with a correct tune means keeping the engine running cooler with less wasted fuel. Ignition timing is a critical part of the equation to limit engine knock, one that many tuning companies ignore, Dinan Performance Software includes full map rescaling to protect the engine and keep everything running smoothly.
Dinan's software also removes the top speed governor so the BMW will be capable of achieving its "natural" top speed.
