Dinan M-Hunter Program Brings M3-Level Performance to BMW B58 Models
Dinan M-Hunter Program Brings M3-Level Performance to BMW B58 Models
For many BMW enthusiasts, the M340i, M440i, and other B58-powered models occupy a sweet spot. They deliver impressive performance, everyday comfort, and refinement—but it's hard not to look at the M3 Competition and not wonder what a full-throttle thrash feels like.
The catch, of course, is price. Moving from an M340i to an M3 Competition can mean spending roughly another $25,000 before options enter the equation.
Dinan's new M-Hunter program offers another route for roughly one-fifth that cost.
Rather than replacing the car, M-Hunter is a structured, five-system upgrade program designed specifically around BMW's turbocharged B58 engine. Owners can upgrade individual systems over time or combine them into increasingly comprehensive packages that improve power, sound, handling, and appearance while maintaining the drivability expected from a modern BMW.
Closing the Gap
Performance is naturally where most owners start.
A fully configured M-Hunter-equipped M340i produces a claimed 455 wheel horsepower and 477 lb-ft of wheel torque on premium pump fuel. Those are wheel dyno numbers rather than estimated crank figures, with acceleration dropping to a claimed 3.9 seconds from 0-60 mph—within 0.41 seconds of the BMW M3 Competition xDrive.

At the center of those gains is Dinan's Power Control Unit (PCU), a piggyback tuning system that recalibrates approximately 20 engine operating parameters, including boost pressure, ignition timing, and fuel delivery. Designed specifically for the B58 platform, the PCU delivers gains of up to 54 wheel horsepower and 66 lb-ft of wheel torque on 93-octane fuel.
Because the system integrates with factory sensors rather than permanently rewriting the ECU, it can be removed without making permanent changes to the vehicle and you don't need to go through the added expense of removing your ECU to inlock it.
A Complete Performance Package
While additional horsepower is often the headline, M-Hunter was designed as a complete vehicle package rather than a single modification.
Engine Tuning

The Dinan Power Control Unit provides the foundation for the program, increasing output while maintaining factory drivability. Its calibration is specific to BMW's B58 engine rather than being adapted from a universal application.
Induction System

To support the additional airflow demanded by the PCU, Dinan pairs the calibration with a dedicated intake and inlet system. The design improves airflow throughout the RPM range while preserving effective cold-air separation to help maintain lower intake temperatures, not to mention great induction noises for the driver.
Exhaust System
The exhaust is engineered with performance as the primary objective. Dinan says the system is tuned to maximize horsepower and torque while producing a deeper, more purposeful exhaust note without introducing the low-speed drone that often accompanies aftermarket systems.
Suspension

Handling improvements come through Dinan's Ride Quality and Handling Kit along with lowering springs. Together they reduce ride height, lower the center of gravity, and improve steering response while minimizing body roll.
Rather than creating a harsh track-only setup, the suspension is intended to preserve everyday comfort while sharpening the car's dynamics on the street.
Finishing Touches

The final elements of the package focus on appearance, including a Dinan engine cover and sport pedal set that visually distinguish the completed build without overwhelming the factory aesthetic.
Built Around the B58 Platform
The M-Hunter program is available for several of BMW's current B58-powered models, including:
- BMW M240i
- BMW M340i and M340i xDrive
- BMW M440i and M440i xDrive
- BMW X3 M40i
- BMW X4 M40i
Because every system was engineered specifically around the B58 platform, the components are designed to work together rather than simply coexist.
Build at Your Own Pace Or Bundle and Save
Owners aren't required to install every component at once.

Each system can be purchased individually, allowing enthusiasts to build the package over time. Those who combine multiple systems receive progressively larger discounts:
- Two systems: 8% off
- Three systems: 10% off
- Four systems: 12% off
- Five systems: 14% off
Vehicles equipped with four or more systems also receive the Dinan badge, identifying the car as a verified multi-system build.
Performance Without Compromise
Performance upgrades often force owners to choose between added capability and long-term peace of mind. Dinan designed M-Hunter to minimize that compromise.
Every hardware component in the program is backed by Dinan's 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with the Power Control Unit covered under the company's Dinan+ program. The coverage mirrors BMW's factory warranty structure, allowing owners to pursue additional performance without giving up the confidence that comes with established warranty support and an extensive dealer network.
For BMW owners who appreciate the balance of the B58 platform but want something that edges closer to true M-car performance, think daily driver meets track weapon, M-Hunter offers a structured path forward. Power, airflow, sound, handling, and appearance are engineered to complement one another, allowing owners to unlock more of the performance that's already there—one system at a time or all at once.
